»Helping others is fun for me.«

Fernando

Software Engineer

At AKRA since 2015

Hola, I am Fernando
As a software engineer, I develop websites, backend and frontend. There was one main reason why I decided to join AKRA in 2015: the opportunity to choose from a variety of projects - and to constantly encounter new people and challenges.
Since starting at AKRA, I've done a bit of everything: stores for sustainable products, websites for logistics and mechanical engineering companies. At the moment, I'm developing an online platform for digital postcards. What I particularly like about it is that I can be completely open when choosing my projects at AKRA. For example, if I don't feel comfortable in a particular area - or if it doesn't work for me as a person. There is always understanding for that! And there are plenty of other projects where people are needed.

»You can be really open here.«
I originally come from Oviedo in northern Spain. A city of 200,000 inhabitants that hardly anyone knows! But it has a university where I studied computer science. I actually wanted to become a doctor - but my grades were too bad. However, technical subjects were always easy for me, for example when I programmed my own calculator at school. The fact that I came to Germany was a total coincidence: a friend of mine went to the UK for a job. I wanted to go there too! I could speak English. When it didn't work out straight away, I looked all over Europe - and got an offer for Hamburg. My plan was to gain five years of experience and then move on.

»Salsa dancing is my thing.«
But that didn't work out! And that was exactly right. I met my girlfriend while salsa dancing and today we have two small children. That's why I don't dance salsa so much anymore, but I used to train up to 4 times a week, 2-3 hours a day. I'll just do that again when the children are older. Only with a few hours less! I really ended up at a great school there. The teacher has a very clear eye for mistakes. Solution-oriented and friendly! Just the way I like it at AKRA.

»The variety of projects is huge.«
I also really enjoy being able to help people. The customer has a problem? I can solve it. Users want an intuitive website? I can build it. But I also like to help colleagues come up with good and better solutions. In “pair programming”, we sit together at a screen. This has many advantages: Two brains are better than one - and in the end, both know how the problem was solved. People are generally very open here. You can always ask questions! And always get an answer. During code reviews, as well as in between. And when things work out, the work is even more fun. And you give a little more! Empowered by people - so to speak.
